rebranding my forum

General
  • hello everyone, i am in a state where i could not come to one conclusion about my forum name

    for example, I have a company called “Vodafone” and I have a forum running in the name of ask.vodafone.com

    Should I name my forum (SEO name) as Ask Vodafone or Vodafone Community or Vodafone Forum

    in this context for example my forum supports a telecommunication learning community and also sometimes we use it to make announcements

    currently, my forum main page title is Ask Vodafone

    ask.vodafone.com/any_discussion
    page title is : Any question | Ask Vodafone

    should I leave the site name as “Ask Vodafone” for this subdomain? or calling it something like “Vodafone Forum” would be nice?

    • Ask Vodafone
    • Vodafone Community
    • Vodafone Forum
  • @Hari My personal choice would be “Community”.

    Here’s why

    Forum definition

    a public meeting place for open discussion

    Community definition

    a group of people with a common characteristic or interest living together within a larger society

    As you can see, “Community” sounds more inclusive and friendly if you use the common English definition.

  • @phenomlab thanks for your inputs, word forum is more cache than the word community … we went forward with the word “Forum”

  • @Hari how does Vodafone community SEO rank in percentage? You know anyone who takes months to plan on something they usually make mistakes a good example bank robberies.

    Ask Vodafone is okay to me

  • @Sala not sure you can use bank robbery here as an analogy. Clearly, being an illegal activity, that automatically comes with inherent risk (not that I’ve ever committed a back robbery of course) with several unknown factors to work around or at least some form of mitigation in place 😁

    On the flip side, I really don’t understand the furore seeking SEO. In my case, I couldn’t care less how sudonix ranks and I’ve made absolutely no effort in this area. The growth this site already has is solely organic. SEO is an already overcrowded space with an overload of contenders for the same keywords and Google ranking, and you could spend literally hundreds of hours and thousands of pounds in the process chasing a holy grail that in fact is already outside of your reach.

    My opinions obviously, but my advice to go with that is not to invest everything you have in Google ranking. High quality content will take care of that for you.

  • 😄

    after trying multiple scripts & technology I can say mostly it’s all about SSR and good link juice + content and the rest is decided by the user (bounce rate)

  • @Hari in my view (and experience), content is king. I personally return to sites because of their content - not back links, or SEO strategy. A great example of this is a YouTube channel - in this case, it’s not search engine optimisation, but the content itself that makes it viral.

  • There’s news that they already sacked a batch of employees; people are going to face it rough. For me, SEO is something you leave to God. Because you can be on the first page for a month, then nowhere to be found again, or ranked in a totally different region. And worse, those computers they use are not monitored, but at least the main site brand will stick.

    @Hari Really? Can you elaborate a bit more here?

    @OT Are you testing embeds, or did you insert this link for another purpose? For clarity, this isn’t a testing category 🙂

    @Panda said in Nodebb design:

    One negative is not being so good for SEO as more Server side rendered forums, if web crawlers dont run the JS to read the forum.

    From recollection, Google and Bing have the capability to read and process JS, although it’s not in the same manner as a physical person will consume content on a page. It will be seen as plain text, but will be indexed. However, it’s important to note that Yandex and Baidu will not render JS, although seeing as Google has a 90% share of the content available on the web in terms of indexing, this isn’t something you’ll likely lose sleep over.

    @Panda said in Nodebb design:

    The “write api” is preferred for server-to-server interactions.

    This is mostly based around overall security - you won’t typically want a client machine changing database elements or altering data. This is why you have “client-side” which could be DOM manipulation etc, and “server-side” which performs more complex operations as it can communicate directly with the database whereas the client cannot (and if it can, then you have a serious security flaw). Reading from the API is perfectly acceptable on the client-side, but not being able to write.

    A paradigm here would be something like SNMP. This protocol exists as a UDP (UDP is very efficient, as it is “fire and forget” and does not wait for a response like TCP does) based service which reads performance data from a remote source, thus enabling an application to parse that data for use in a monitoring application. In all cases, SNMP access should be “RO” (Read Only) and not RW (Read Write). It is completely feasible to assume complete control over a firewall for example by having RW access to SNMP and then exposing it to the entire internet with a weak passphrase.

    You wouldn’t do it (at least, I hope you wouldn’t) and the same ethic applies to server-side rendering and the execution of commands.

    @Vijay-Kumavat-0 I think you’d be better off customising the plugin above to be honest. It seems like you’d be reinventing the wheel otherwise.

    I’d modify

    /nodebb/node_modules/nodebb-rewards-essentials/lib/conditions.js
    /nodebb/node_modules/nodebb-rewards-essentials/lib/rewards.js

    These seem to be the two files that control what is in the dropdown lists.

    @Panda said in Sidebar Widget is no longer on the side!:

    Ah, so sidebar wont work on mobile?

    Correct. If you review the docs on bootstrap, you’ll notice that it is designed on a grid system

    https://getbootstrap.com/docs/5.0/layout/grid/

    What I mean by changing the category is moving it on here to general as you posted it in bugs, when it isn’t.

    @dave1904 I’d start by adding a console.log function to hookData so you can see what is being returned

    return hookData; console.log(hookData):

    @JAC yeah, I’ve never seen the appeal. I tried to get into LinkedIn a while back and then gave up because it’s just chock full of people who have far too much time on their hands telling anyone who will listen about how great they are and what they have achieved.

    Actions speak louder than words.
